From Idea to Doorstep: The Bone 80
We don’t usually write blogs like this, but the Bone 80’s journey felt worth sharing. From late-night calls to refining packaging details, this one’s been a ride. Here’s an inside look at what goes into a vendor (like us) stocking products (like the Bone 80).
Why the Bone 80?
We picked the Bone 80 because we've worked with GameZone before—they make solid stuff like the Aim 60 and AimX cases. They're well-known in China but haven't really expanded to North America, so we thought, "Why not bring it over?" Since we keep a close eye on both the Chinese and Western markets, it felt like a natural move.
Plus, they are a joy to work with. At one point, Chant (our founder) was calling GameZone's boss more than his girlfriend. The guy's super humble and always open to feedback, even though he's already established and we're just a smaller overseas vendor. We helped fix some grammar issues and refine their packaging—little things, but they matter. These are the kinds of people we love working with. GameZone also has some serious cred domestically, having worked with staple names like Valve and Fnatic.
Where Does the Bone 80 Fit the Keyboard Hobby?
We see Hall Effect (HE) keyboards as the future. HE is awesome for gaming and performance-centred customizability, but MX switches still win in three big areas: choice, quality, and price.
MX switches give you endless options to tweak builds just right, but HE is catching up fast with solid releases like the Owlab Ti HE switch. MX cases still come out on top right now, but HE-compatible cases are stepping up—like the Geon Frog Mini Legarra, Bone 80, and Owlab x Wooting Case. Plus, HE switch prices have already dropped since last year, and we expect that trend to continue. Same goes for cases.
Why Did We Go with a Preorder?
We believe in GameZone's products, but it's tricky balancing costs, shipping, customer satisfaction, and all the moving parts that come with getting a product into people's hands. Preorders let us place a bigger order (with extras for in-stock sales) while making sure everyone who wants one gets one.
That said, we're cautious with preorders (and even more so with group buys) because we've been on the painful end of those long wait times. After some back and forth, we settled on a preorder model that is fulfilled within a month, maxing out at a two-month turnaround.
What Do We Hope You Get Out of It?
We just want you to be impressed when you build it. We think the Bone 80 takes the Wooting to a whole new level. You don’t have to care about our vision, trends, or preorder strategy — what matters most is that the Bone 80 sounds good, feels good, and looks good. We think it nails all three.
As prefaced in the intro, this was a very different style of blog. We hope you've enjoyed this inside look and appreciate you reading. Take care!
